Exmouth cycle speedway racers William and Owen Tidball have recently been crowned British Indoor Cycle Speedway Champions.

Will is now the British Under-16 champion whilst younger broher Owen lays claim to the Under-13 title.

Completing a superb series for Exmouth riders, 19-year-old Lauren Hookway bagged the runners-up spot in the ladies class.

The British Indoor Championship, which this year was held in Coventry, is an annual competition, which takes place in a gym with a safety air-fence, involved riders from all over the country and is held over

two days of fierce competition.

Normally these Exmouth Community College students compete on outdoor circuits during the season from March to November.

Cycle Speedway is an exciting sport, similar to motor speedway, but raced on bicycles with no brakes or gears.

Riders compete on an oval circuit from a standing start over four laps on a specially prepared shale track.

William and Owen are members of the Exeter Aces Cycle Speedway Club and train regularly at the Aces’ track which is situated at Cofton Road, Marsh Barton.

Anyone interested in trying their hand, whatever age group, would be made most welcome by the club where bikes and equipment can always be loaned.

It is an exciting, challenging, healthy and inexpensive sport which is enjoyed by many.

At Exeter, the ages of members range from five years to 55 years!
