Exmouth Belles play part in national event

Four Exmouth Running Belles took part in a nationwide event recently.

Lorraine Kirby, Amanda McCann, Sue Hill and Jane MacDonald were taking part in the Great British Relay 2014.

This is an attempt to break the official world record for the longest continuous relay around the Great British Isles.

The relay began on June 1, with the object being to run 24-hours per day, seven days a week until 7,000 kilometres have been completed.

The Belles took their turn carrying the specially designed GPS baton along the cycle track from Exmouth to Budleigh and handed it over in Otterton.

When the Belles picked up the baton the relay was four hours and 40minutes behind schedule, but the Belles made good time and completed their eight-mile stage (427) at 03.45am.

Belle and relay team leader Susan Hill said: “It was good fun, but running along the cycle track in the dark was a bit scary at 3am!”

The relay continues around the coast until the 594 stages are complete with the ultimate aim to see the event recorded in the Guinness Book of Records!
