Twelve Exmouth Running Belles travelled to Bath at the weekend to take part in the Half marathon his weekend along with over 11,000 other runners, writes Clare Medlock.

The Belles described the race as having a ‘great atmosphere’ which included running up a hill to the sound of the Samba Sulis drummers in the city’s Queen Square, children banging saucepans, and local radio stations playing music.

One Belle described the drizzly cool weather as perfect running conditions, although a head wind at a few points made the going a little tough at times.

The first Belle across the line was Sue Hill (1.41) who was 2nd place in her vet55 category. Jane Macdonald (1.43) was next and Amanda McCann (1.46) followed very closely behind. Sue, Jane and Amanda are Harribelles (Belles who also run with the Harriers). Together the trio came fifth in the vet ladies team entries.

Kay Douglas and Clare Medlock were delighted with their personal best times of 1.49 and 1.54.01 respectively. Penny Rye (1.54.55) and Christine Doe (1.58) also came in comfortably under the two hour mark. Christine was ‘thrilled’ as the comfortable sub two-hour time which had narrowly evaded her last two runs.

The remaining Belles followed closely behind. Andrea Johnston was particularly pleased with her time of 2.01, knocking a massive nine minutes of her time set in October last year. She crossed the line with friend Zoe Nelmes. Cally Rowland (2.03), Lydia Hill and Jane Hall (2.04) paced well and ended comfortably with sprint finishes.

Sue Rook managed the second 10k of the 13-mile course, five minutes quicker than the first half of the race showing recent Grizzly training had improved her stamina. She then bounced across the line in a respectful 2.09.

The final Belle across the line was Sally Blower who was 8250 out of 11200 and finished the race in 2.12.
