Exmouth badminton star Ben Lane returned from the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast with a bronze medal.

The 10-strong England badminton team came home with the best medal haul that Badminton England has seen in the past 16 years.

The team bagged a haul of six medals with Ben playing his part in the team bronze that was won during the first week of the Games.

Ben played in the mixed doubles with regular partner Jess Pugh and in the men’s doubles he was paired with Chris Adcock, winning both his matches against South African opposition.

The team bronze medal play-off match saw England face Singapore in what was a close match, but did end with England winning 3-0 to secure the medal.

The second week saw the individual competition commence. Ben and Jess came up against the top seeded Indian pair Satwiksaira Rankirredy and Ashwini Ponnappa, narrowly losing out 21-18, 21-17.

In the men’s doubles, Ben and Chris played Australians Middleton and Smith in the first round, which set up a clash with a top Malaysian pair.

After three long sets the English pair just lost out 21-19 in the third end.

This week sees Ben back in competition in Spain where he is competing in the European Championships.
