Exmouth ABC to stage the Western Counties finals of the schoolboy championships

PUBLISHED: 08:28 06 February 2014 | UPDATED: 08:28 06 February 2014

Exmouth Amateur Boxing club’s show on Saturday March 8, at the Pavilion, has taken on added significance this past week, writes Phil Crook.

Apart from 10 club members taking part in the show, the club has now agreed to stage the Western Counties finals of the Schoolboy Championships.

The famous old competition has been a stepping stone for some of the games greats to first make their mark. Although not having any boxers in this year’s tournament, the club has had considerable success in the past.

In the 1970’s Dave Johnson reached the National semi-finals and Phil Doble the quarter finals.

In 1985, Philip Helliker came within a whisker of making the final with a narrow defeat in the semi-finals in Surrey. In recent years, Noel Gatehouse, Daniel Hardy and the Squire twins, Jonah and Eric, all did very well at Western Counties level.

With the southern division champions of the Western Counties consisting of Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and the Channel Islands meeting the Northern Division champions, which is made up of Avon, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Somerset, boxing of the highest order will be on show.

If this wasn’t enough, local favourites Matt Case, Jamie Drummond and Josh Pender will be on the bill.

The action will begin early because of the amount of bouts due, with the doors opening at 6pm and the action getting underway at 6.30.

All seats in the hall, including ringside, are priced at £12.

Tickets will only be on sale at the club’s headquarters in New North Road on Monday night’s from 7pm until 8pm, or on the door on the night.
