We welcomed a group from 2nd Exeter Scouts for our first one-day course this year on Monday, writes Jill Harmer.

The weather was really pleasant for a large group of young people to try out gliding, with a light north easterly wind and clear blue sky.

The group of 29 Scouts and their leaders spent half the day at Dunkeswell airfield, plane spotting and half the day at North Hill airfield, flying in gliders. Some of the Scouts were fortunate to get short soaring flights up to the inversion at 2700ft, whilst others were caught in large areas of heavy sink. We look forward to welcoming some back during their three months’ temporary membership.

On Thursday, Douglas Boyle from Budleigh Salterton, fresh from attending last week’s course and after a little practice circuits and launch failure consolidation, resoloed in a glider after 20 years. Douglas started gliding again in January with Devon and Somerset Gliding Club.

In the late afternoon, Pete Harmer from Cruwys Morchard and Malcolm Vest from Wellington, on an aerotow training flight managed to find some gentle wave lift over the Broadhembury ridge climbing to 4800ft.

Good Friday was a really good soaring day with deep blue skies and white puffy cumulus clouds. A 200km task was set from North Hill - Blandford Forum - The Park near Mere - Cullompton and back to North Hill.

Pete Startup from Ottery St Mary, Wyn Davies from Topsham, John Pursey from Plymouth and Phil Morrison from Exmouth all flew their private gliders on the cross-country flight.

On Saturday, Ron Johns from Gunnislake and John Pursey from Plymouth decided to fly across Dartmoor to Brentor to sample the Easterly wave conditions. Ron climbed to 6500ft and glid back to North Hill, whilst John managed to climb to 8500ft but lost the opportunity to fly back and landed at Dartmoor Gliding Society with a road retrieve to follow.
