The holiday weekend saw some lovely sailing conditions for Exe S C, writes Rex Frost.

Saturday afternoon saw a mixed group of Trios and others brave the waves of the swash-way to race in calmer conditions at sea, watched over by Nick Coombes and Brian Collo.

With the wind shifting and lightening, the course had to be moved about and was shortened several times to keep the races to time.

The light conditions suited the RS400 of Rhodes and Arscott who were continually making huge gains while the 200 of Anne and Mike Way, seemed to suffer all the wind shifts.

The small Lasers of Charlie King and George Melbourne suffered from the swell and light breeze and were finished after twolaps. They then decided not to do a second race.

The Trios had their usual tussle, with Keith and Hazel Lawson staying near the front most of the time, but were beaten by Josh Geare and Bob Horlock in one race and by Guy and Marilyn in the second.

Josh Geare sailing his first Trio race looked to be well ahead in the second race but sailed into a huge wind shift and then trailed the fleet home.

On the Monday, race officer Frankie Upton had a good Holiday fleet of 12 boats and set a pleasant river course for King Cup.

In the brightening conditions, the duo of Rhodes and Arscott kept ahead, but on Handicap Paul Beer came in a good second, followed by Bob and Colette Horlock, with the little Laser 4.7 of Louis Reece in a very creditable seventh place.

Meanwhile out at sea the first group of prospective Day and coastal skippers was being trained and assessed by Karen Melling.

They visited Dartmouth, night sailed to Brixham (in the rain) and then polished up their (very) close quarters, boat handling. Arriving back in Exmouth on Tuesday, all were very pleased with their instruction and their new skills; Iain Horlock and Pete Fox were awarded their certificates. This is an important milestone for Exe, as very few other sailing clubs offer yacht qualification courses.

The Wednesday evening race saw race officer Jan Morrison sent the fleet on a shortish river course getting the two fleets way in clean starts. In the Trios there were the usual tussles between Guy Farrant, Bob Horlock and Martin Luce, but it was Andrew and Caroline McAusland who finally won, with Nick Webber being delighted to get out of the tail end slot.

In a good sized Handicap fleet, Victoria Upton was second after a stunning race in her little Feva, while Iain Horlock was lucky not to be disqualified for sailing without a sail number. For full results see; www.exe-sailing-club.org
