Newly promoted Exe travelled to Gloucester for the first game of the EHL Conference West season.
Exe settled well into the opening minutes against a very well organised and powerful Gloucester team, absorbing a significant amount of early pressure. Through counter attacking play, Exe engineered a penalty corner, but couldn’t capitalise with the shot narrowly missing on the left hand post. Gloucester responded with an immediate attack resulting in a spectacular overhead save from Suzy Eagles in the Exe goal.
The Exe defenders battled hard against a barrage of well worked opportunities, with further excellent saves from player of the match Suzy Eagles, and great work from Kate Wright relieving pressure down the right. However, on the 24th minute the deadlock was broken and Exe were undone by a skilful individual goal. With Gloucester’s confidence levels high two further goals followed in quick succession and Exe found themselves 3–0 down going into the break.
Exe started the second half with greater belief enabling their forwards to get more involved in the game with Laura Allen and Bridie Marlow making some penetrating runs, and creating a couple of chances to score. Exe defence held firm for the remainder of the game, frustrating Gloucester and limiting their chances.
The match ended 3-0, but Exe can take heart from a solid second half performance and look forward to welcoming Swansea to St Peters School next Saturday (1pm).
