With the season starting in September, Exe Hockey Club is looking for new members to come along and have a go, writes Lizze Jane.
Offering a high level of hockey to suit all abilities, Exe Hockey Club was formed in May 2007 as the result of a merger between two long established, successful clubs – Exmouth and Exeter Ladies. Running four senior ladies teams, including a national league 1st XI team and a thriving mixed junior section, Exe Hockey is renowned as being a friendly Club with an exciting season ahead.
Club Captain Kirsty Crocker said: “We are really looking forward to starting the new season after the summer break. Exe Hockey is such a great club to play for, whatever level you are. There is a team to suit any age and ability and whatever the weather, we always manage to have fun!”
Welcoming former 210 times capped Pakistani international player Ali Raza as head coach, the teams will be developing their skills and knowledge from this world-class player throughout the forthcoming season. Ali, who is a level three qualified coach, has been involved in coaching sections of England Hockey JRPC and has represented his country at the Sydney and Athens Olympics.
Ali said: “Last seasons success for Exe Hockey Club in rejoining the Investec Women’s Hockey League following their brief relegation to West Premier Division One has been great. We now need to capitalise on this to ensure they continue to develop and succeed. Pre-season training has gone well and now we can start honing the skills of the first and second eleven’s to make them formidable in their individual leagues.”
Competitive hockey begins on Saturday September 7, as Exe Hockey Club host their annual invitational Tournament. The club welcomes Taunton, Bude, Plymouth Marjon, Mannamead, Okehampton, Teign and Isca to participate with them in a round robin Tournament using the St Peter’s and West Exe Schools pitches from 12noon. The semi finals and final are then played at St Peter’s from 4-6pm. Spectators are very welcome.
On Sunday September 15, Exe Hockey Club will be offering their expertise at the Unexpected Festival taking place on Exeter Quay.
Along with other sports clubs from across Exeter, they will be offering members of the public a chance to come along and try hockey – perfect for newcomers to the sport and a great way to celebrate a successful summer of sport in the UK.
