The first Saturday of March saw Exe Sailing Club hold its annual prize-giving dinner, writes Rex Frost.

The club had been amazingly transformed into a banqueting venue with Black and white themed décor, by a band of dedicated ladies, and the members dressed to impress. VIPs from Topsham SC and Starcross YC were welcomed enthusiastically and in his welcome speech the commodore Dave Preston emphasized that it was a night for celebration and enjoyment. The members and guests according to all reports thoroughly enjoyed their three-course meal and then toasted the Queen with glasses of port.

In his post dinner speech, the Commodore referred to the huge amount of work done by volunteers in throughout the year and mentioning amongst others Ted Draper (catering), Mary Fagan (social), Mick Marshall (House) and their teams of helpers. Bouquets were presented to Liz Matson, Carol Griffiths and Alison May who had been instrumental in organising and decorating the rooms. The prize giving was then conducted by Sailing Secretary, Guy Farrant with Mary Fagan presenting the trophies. Trophies were awarded for each of the four or five race series in the three categories of racing; Juniors, dinghies and cruisers. Amongst the prize winners were; James Nicholson, Victoria Upton, Harriet Melbourne, Les Arscott, Chris Rhodes, Steve Best, Nick Pearce, Nick Webber, Hazel and Keith Lawson.

The previous commodore Rex Frost then officiated in presenting the Claret Jug. It was, he explained the commodore’s award to the member who had done most for the club that year (and usually for a number of years). This year it was being awarded to Bob Horlock who had completed 3 strenuous and successful years as Training Centre Principal. In addition he continued and continues, to run the eXesquad, oversees Thursday night race training, modernised the training room and installed new equipment. Since stepping down he has continued to spend time every week renovating and maintaining the clubs boats. The award was applauded hugely by those present. The club’s Vice Admiral Eileen Underhill then presented Rex Frost with a set of sailing waterproofs in thanks for his work as commodore for the past three years. Her words were rendered scarcely audible by the hilarity of the members, as the clothing was modelled by a certain lady friend. The Commodore, Dave Preston then made a presentation to cruiser captain, David Palfreyman in recognition of his presence of mind and leadership in rescuing the unconscious crew member of another yacht, from the water.

After the close of formal/informal proceedings the floor was cleared and the Disco kept members and guests entertained, until all were danced off their feet.

Cruisers are being launched before the end of March and Dinghy sailing recommences on April 6. The sailing programme can be seen at http://www.exe-sailing-club.org/
