Ross Oliver’s ultra consistent mare Wee Fly followed up her course victory two weeks ago in the ladies’ four-miler at Flete Park, staying on tenaciously to hold the fast finishing Mister Moonax (Hannah Hawkins), writes Granville Taylor.

”She has won this same race for the last three years with three different jockeys, Polly (Gundry); Jo Buck and now Bryony Frost,” said Ross.

17-year-old Bryony Frost seized her opportunity well, but it was unfortunate that Jo Buck, still firmly in contention for her first National Ladies’ title, had to miss the ride having fractured an ankle at the Cheltenham hunter chase meeting.

Jo missed another winning ride when Maisie Day made virtually all to win the three miles maiden. Ed Barrett stepped in to partner his fourth winner of the season on the mare Leslie Jefford trains for her owner/breeder Tigger Day.

The shorter Maiden provided a first success for 21-year-old Matthew Herbert on his own Normansmistress. Matthew, who has worked for Devon trainer Martin Hill since leaving school, owns and trains the seven-year-old mare who was bought at Ascot sales last autumn. The winner’s previous modest form saw her sent off at 20-1. “We are improving together and I have done lots of schooling with her,” said the young rider.

Special Account justified favouritism in the Men’s Open under Neil Harris. “He was relaxed and settled today,” commented Neil. Trainer Camilla Scott is contemplating a possible tilt at the John Corbett Cup at Stratford with the winner.

Micheal Nolan rode runner-up Quizzling in the Men’s Open, and went one better when Fier Destrier just held Ruling Reef in the Confined. This race changed shape when odds-on favourite Direct Flight crashed through the wing at the fifth fence, leaving Fier Destrier in front. The winner is trained by Gordon Chambers on behalf of owners Richard Candy, Jenny Luscombe and Clive Ralph.

Lee Glanville’s Sunken Secret (Ed Glassonbury) just held King of Alcatraz to win a good Restricted in the fastest time of the day. The winner stayed on gamely in the soft ground, having led most of the way, but had to survive a stewards’ enquiry after edging towards the runner-up close home. “We bought Sunken Secret just after Christmas but he was very poor when he came from Ireland,” said Lee, who trains the gelding herself just three miles from the course.
