A last minute change of venue proved to be fortuitous as the sun shone and newcomers to the sport of TREC had the best of introductions, writes Debbie Percy.

Well done to all the riders and their horses that tackled the obstacles, or set out with a map at the Trec South West Winter Series Trec last Sunday held at Bicton Arena.

Trec is a relatively new horse sport in Britain, originating in France, and involves riders guiding their horses around a course of obstacles either in hand or ridden, showing off their control of pace at Canter and walk, and following a route drawn on a map at a set speed.

The British Horse Society Winter Series is a perfect introduction to this fantastic sport as the obstacles and Control of Paces are contained in an enclosed arena and the orienteering route is just for fun.

It was great to see so many people enjoying their horses in the glorious sunshine. The obstacles proved challenging to some and a few riders took detours off route over the surrounding countryside, but all competitors came back smiling and had great fun.

Well done to our winners; Starter and Newcomers Classes: Jayne Wootten-Pineles on Tomohawk, Intermediate Class: Annette Medlyn on Abigal, and in the Open Class: Susie Ford on Kookie.
