The point-to-point season reaches its conclusion at Umberleigh on Saturday with the Torrington Farmers’ Foxhounds hosting the grand finale.

As well as racing, the meeting also features the Devon and Cornwall Area pony racing finals and the crowning of the national and area point to point champions, writes Donna Harris.

In the ladies’ open, Charlotte Prichard will be hoping to clinch the national ladies’ novice riders’ title on Prince Massini. She faces competition from The General Lee is a ladies’ open specialist and could clinch the national ladies’ title for Jane Williams, Lady Myfanwy is another ladies’ open specialist, and Cannon Bridge is interesting having beaten Oslot into second at Hackwood Park.

The first race on the card is the confined and this looks to be between Allerford Jack and Alpha Native. Both clocked up creditable wins for Richard Woollacott and 2012 champion-in-waiting Will Biddick respectively.

Of the 21 entered in the restricted, Cover Version acts on good to soft, and Stalbridgeswansong has been knocking on the door. He finished three quarters of a length behind Bally James at Chaddesley Corbett recently with Ease and Grace four lengths back in third.

The 21 entries in the men’s open include the prolific winning gelding Findlay’s Find who is a strong finisher and won a mixed open in May on good to soft for Nick Williams. In the same race, Joe Hill may be hoping that Ravethebrave can take him to the top of the table in the gentlemen novice riders’ title race.

The intermediate is a tricky race to read with many of the entries preferring firmer ground. Winter Sunshine acts on good to soft, and both My Fella and My Runaway are well rated.

The final race of the season being the Open Maiden and with 29 entered this could well be divided. The bookies will have fun testing the racegoers with these.

The meeting is immensely grateful to all the sponsors including Halsdon Arabian Stud and Nick Piper Ltd who have stepped in to help at the last minute and there will be all the usual on course bookies, trade stands, bar and catering.

The two pony race finals take place after the maiden race.

The course is situated at Chapleton Barton on the A377 five miles south east of Barnstaple EX37 9EB.
