A total of 49 runners contested the six races in bright sunshine at Trebudannon for the second and final meeting this season at this popular Cornish track, writes Granville Taylor.

Johny’s Way was not hard pressed to beat Light Touch and Deimne in the Mixed Open. Ryan Bliss was partnering Johny’s Way for the first time and was full of praise for the eight-year-old. “It’s easy riding a good horse like that,” he remarked. The Cattistock qualified Johny’s Way had taken the notable scalp of Southwestern in last year’s Cornish National on this track, but was having only his second outing this term. “He had a bit of a cough then a punctured foot,” explained his breeder John Norman who shares ownership with trainer Graham Foot.

Will Biddick rode his 39th winner of the season when Searree held off Richard Woollacott’s mount Hand Act Or Part and Ann’s Lottery in a small but select field for the Restricted. The winner belongs to Four Burrow point-to-point secretary David Congdon, and is trained by Pauline Geering.

Biddick had to settle for the runner-up spot in the Mares Maiden when Jewellery just went under to Hallo Dolly in a 12-runner field. Darren Edwards is enjoying his best ever campaign and notched his 21st winner this season on Hallo Dolly, who is owned and trained by Sarah Prouse.

The Maiden limited to colts and geldings went to smart four-year-old Urubu D’Irlande who was making his racecourse debut. Rob Hawker had him in the leading group throughout and he strode clear in the home straight. “He was bought at the sales in Paris last summer and I jointly own him with Paul Nicholls.”

The three miles maiden went to Josh Guerriero’s mount Batu Ferringhi, staying on from the second last. The winner had cut little ice in two Irish bumpers and is now in the care of Claire Hitch (nee Wright) on Exmoor. He had shown promise in his two runs since joining Claire last December. and she paid tribute to Josh Guerriero and Ed Glassonbury. “He was poor when he came over and it has taken a lot of schooling by those boys,” she said.

Micheal Nolan is on the verge of turning conditional. The Irishman just missed out on what might have been a final pointing winner when Midnight Marine went under to Benetwood in the PPORA Club race for 10-year-olds and upwards. The winner is a formerly useful ex-McManus chaser who was given to Moretonhampstead trainer Gail Haywood after breaking down. Lizzie Kelly, who is studying event management at Winchester University, sent Benetwood clear from the home turn.
