Mary King’s former four-star ride Apache Sauce was put down after suffering a tendon injury at fence two on the cross-country at Weston Park on Saturday, aged 16.

The popular white-faced chestnut was being ridden in the young rider CCI** by Mary’s daughter Emily. “The horse has never been lame in his long career,” Mary said, adding: “We are so sad. They were cantering happily along, between fences two and three and the tendon ruptured.” Emily, 16, took on Apache Sauce in May this year, when Mary and owner Gillian Jonas decided to retire him from top-level competition.

The pair had completed five events together without any cross-country jumping penalties, achieving three top-10 placings.

Apache Sauce, a British-bred by the thoroughbred Endoli, finished 10 four-star events with Mary King, ending up in the top 10 five times. His best result was fourth at Burghley 2008.

He moved to Mary’s Salcombe Regis yard in 2004 and won his first novice event shortly afterwards. Apache Sauce won 1511 BE points during his career.
