Exeter Racecourse’s intermediate point-to-point champion will be crowned amidst the glamour and glitz of the track’s ladies’ night on May 8 when live music after racing will provide the perfect back drop to celebrations.

The hunter chase final is the result of ten qualifying races held throughout the Devon and Cornwall point-to-point area which are sponsored by the racecourse.

A spokesman said: “We have supported point-to-points for several years now. It enables us to sponsor racing at the grass roots level as well as hold a prestigious final which we hope will attract a good point-to-point crowd as it also coincides with the finale to our season.”

The first of the ten qualifiers kicked off at Ideford Arch in December when the Sam Holdsworth-trained Gunpark won under Darren Edwards. Then a huge crowd at Chipley Park saw Gwynne Phillips’ home-bred Books Review win with the eight-year-old’s trainer David Gibbs’ son Bradley on board.

At Buckfastleigh there was a thrilling finish when Penmore Mill and Keppols Hill dead heated. Jack Barber was in the saddle at Ottery St Mary when Benedicus won and at Treborough Hill Richard Woollacott rode Allerford Jack to victory.

Will Biddick was on board Keppols Hill at Buckfastleigh and he scored another success on the well-backed Jopero at the Western meeting at Wadebridge.

Firm ground at Great Trethew meant Mayfair Lastchance walked over the race and at Kilworthy, Sue Trumps’ home bred Kirkleigh, ridden by Tom Chanin, was the winner.

Tom’s brother Ian was on Hameldown Tor at the Spooners and West Dartmoor meeting at Cherrybrook, clocking up the fastest time of the day. Upcott Cross’s concluding qualifier proved a battle between Dashing John and Gort Na Lea with the latter winning under Robert Hawker.

The intermediate final on ladies’ night will give point-to-point enthusiasts the chance to dress up and enjoy a fun evening out, including seeing catwalk appearances by champion jockey AP McCoy in support of his friend the international footballer David James. James set up the David James Foundation on 2005 which is the nominated charity for the night.
