THE South Tetcott attracted a total of 76 runners on good ground at Upcott Cross, writes Granville Taylor.

A classy Men’s Open saw three of the seven runners still in with a chance at the last fence, but it was front running Whizzaar (Richard Woollacott) who pulled out extra on the run-in to hold the sustained challenges of both Special Account and Tres Bien. “He tries hard and is an absolute star,” said in-form trainer Kayley Jones.

It was a similar story in the Ladies’ Open with Rainbow Tree strongly pressed by Doof and Havenstone at the final obstacle. This time Rainbow Tree blundered his chance away, allowing Vicky Wade to seize her opportunity on Doof, who was taking this event for the third successive year.

Barney’s Mate scored for the fifth time this season under 21-year-old Conor Smith in the Novice Riders’ contest. Conor, from Downpatrick, works in the Richard Barber yard and picked up the Harley Racing National Novice award at Stratford last Friday.

Another promising novice rider, Keiron Edgar, was going great guns until breaking his collar bone in March. He was seen to good effect with a positive front running performance on Fairhaven, who kept pulling out extra to beat his 14 rivals in the Restricted.

Josh Guerriero’s double was initiated when five-year-old Indiana Bay retained his unbeaten record for the season in the Confined. This promising youngster is trained by Jill Dennis at Bude on behalf of his veteran owner Charlie Rush.

Guerriero’s double was completed when Mike Weir’s Lucia Popp made all to win the first Maiden which had to be split again on the day. Amazingly 17 of the 20 entries were declared for that event. Ned White was successful with similar tactics in the other section under Tom Chanin. “Ned White didn’t come in until March and doesn’t run much because of his brittle legs,” explained trainer Robert Chanin.

Laura Scott rode her first winner on Brockwell Park in the concluding Maiden. The winner, bought at the Fairyhouse Derby sales as a three-year-old, is owned and trained by her mother Camilla. “Laura broke her wrist on one of her two rides last season and has only had a few rides,” said Camilla. “Amazing,” was the succinct post-race comment from the 18-year-old rider who is studying at West Somerset College at Minehead.
