The Easter weekend offers another action packed Point to Point racing opportunity for racegoers with the first of this weekends meetings to be held at Cherrybrook this Saturday, April 7, writes Donna Harris..

The Spooners and West Dartmoor Hunt and trainers alike will be praying for rain to get racing back in full flow, but the course has been watered since Saturday. Seven races are on the card with the first race kicking off at 1pm with the Hunt Members. Sponsored by Condy Mathias chartered accountants.

Of the ten entries Hereweareagain tends to find form in the spring. He won a two horse race last weekend at Great Trethew. Shannon Bob ran a good third at Wadebridge in a race won by Sobre Tesor. He was leading until three out but soon weakened after colliding with the running rail on the bend.

Next up is the Restricted with 14 entries. Sponsored by Tavistock Tyre Marks. Before The War won his Maiden at Larkhill in March making virtually all in good to soft ground. Of those lining up to challenge Blazing Memory trained by Sue Trump came on for a third in February to score in a fourteen runner field at Cothelstone when ridden by the talented Jo Buck also in good to soft ground. Mister Trigger has clocked up a couple of seconds this season and seems to act on any. Mt Kintyre won on firm going at Milborne St Andrew when sent off odds on favorite in a three runner race.

Seventeen are entered in the Mixed Open. Sponsored by A&D Transport. Of the runners Allerford Jack trained and ridden by Richard Woollacott is in fine form . He won at Treborough Hill beating Kirkleigh into second. Lucette Annie won at Buckfastleigh in impressive style clocking up more points for Darren Edwards. Portway Lane is a previous course winner here and Prince de Bersey will be looking to find his old form and improve on his second at Treborough Hill in March.

The Confined has attracted 14 entries and is sponsored by The Rock Inn. Jopero had a comfortable win at Wadebridge beating Global Party by five lengths. He followed up with a win at Kilworthy then ridden by Richard Woollacott beating Brook Castle by a short head.

Lucette Annie may be the one to beat if choosing this race instead of the mixed open.

The Exeter racecourse Intermediate has also attracted 14 entries. Looking to qualify for the Hunter Chase final at Exeter racecourse is the front running Gorteenwood . He led the field and made all when winning at 20-1 at Kilworthy ridden impressively by Micheal Nolan. He can be excused for his early season mishaps of a slip up and saddle slipping . Those lining up to challenge could be Devon Mead Dashing John and Googoobarabajagal to name but a few.

There are two Divisions of the Open Maiden with 15 entered in each. These have been sponsored by Langdon Transport and Synergie chartered accountants. The bookies will be the best indicator of form among these.

The course is on the A386 Tavistock to Okehampton Road and will be clearly signposted. As well as racing there will be other attractions including trade stands, children’s entertainment, catering a licensed bar and on-course bookies. Gate charge £10 per car and driver and £5 each additional adult passenger.

The Easter weekend winds up with the Four Burrow meeting at Trebudannon on Monday, April 9.

Over 130 entries have been received and this meeting promises to stage some exciting racing with the first race scheduled at 1pm. A spokesman for the course has said that the ground will be watered if necessary.

The Hunt Members races kicks of the action and is sponsored by St.Columb Supporters Club and 12 are entered.

Of these Ross Oliver’s Wee Fly looks in fine form. He won this race here last season and has been in the frame on four out of his five starts so far this season winning the Mixed Open at Great Trethew in February. Another entry is Searree won his Maiden at Wadebridge with young Michael Heard on board beating Hi Wycombe by two lengths last month.

There are two Divisions of the Open Maiden 2m4f with 18 and 19 entered. These should be well supported if the ground is right and the bookies will be an indicator of which to follow.

The fourth race on the card is the Confined which is sponsored by Truro Tractors. Entries onclude Jopero who won comfortably at Wadebridge beating Bathwick Breeze by six lengths. Next time out he beat Brook Castle by a short head at Kilworthy. The two could meet here again to battle it out.

21 are entered in the Mixed Open which also looks highly competitive. This race is sponsored by Brewin Dolphin. Entered is Crank Hill who has won twice this season at Larkhill and Milborne St Andrews, the latter when ridden by Jenny Carr. Of the Richard Barber entries Flanshan got the better of odds on favorite Mahonia at Charlton Horethorne. Keppols Hill won at the same meeting in under six minutes.

Lamana Brood Mares sponsor the Restricted with fourteen entries.

They include Mike Weir’s Barney Again who won impressively at the first time of asking at Kilworthy. The Richard Barber trained Bellsinni Ron scored at Charlton Horethorne ridden by Will Biddick. Double Bank and Spot The Grey have also creditable runs in their favour.

The Open Maiden for 4,5,6 and 7 year olds also has two Divisions with 19 and 20 entered. The punters will again be looking to the bookies for clues as to who’s hot and who’s not.

There will be on course trade stands, catering, licensed bar and bookies. Entrance is £20 Car and passengers £10 Car and driver.

The course is located five miles east of Newquay nr A39 close to St Columb Major TR94LP.
