The first of two Point-to-Point meetings takes place at Great Trethew near Liskeard this Sunday (February 26). With 125 entered this meeting promises to be full of action with plenty of potential young stars of the future entered in the maiden races, writes Donna Harris.

The card kicks off at noon with the Cornish Times sponsoring the Hunt Members race where nine are entered. Jackie Du Plessis has a terrific record in the race and this year she is represented by Armenian Boy. He won the Mixed Open at Ideford Arch in December. He can be a tricky ride and when sent off 9-4 favourite at the return meeting he unseated his rider at the sixth fence.

Also entered is Quizzling who prefers right handed tracks and goes particularly well for Micheal Nolan, winning four races in 2011.

Trainers like sending out their unraced horses at this track and the Brightwells sponsored Open Maiden 2m4f race has attracted 25 entries. Florence, which is part owned by Will Biddick, looks an interesting prospect. Of those that have had a run Degenerate trained by Ashley Farrant had some previous flat form and ran fifth in an Open maiden at Blackforest Lodge. He was well fancied having been sent off favourite and should come on for that run. Torken, owned and trained by Alan Walter, showed some mid race speed when running here last year before pulling up tired in heavy ground.

St Austell Brewery sponsor the Open Maiden for 5/6/7yr olds. This race has 44 entered and will be divided. The Lucy Gardner-trained and ridden Back On Tow looks on form and has only just missed out on a win twice at Ideford Arch when finding one too good on the day. Marie McGuiness trained Otitis Tarda was only a few lengths behind Back On Tow and should come on for that run.

Forty Knights ran a creditable fourth when ridden by Michael Heard in a split Open Maiden at Wadebridge and is another who would have come on for the run. Shanann Star an ex-Irish Pointer was a close second in a Mares only Maiden at Ideford Arch.

Roger Young Engineering sponsors the Mixed Open. Thirteen are entered and these include the Ashley Farrant trained Mioche D’Estruval. He will be looking to follow up on his win at Wadebridge when beating the odds on favourite Perouse into third.

Ross Oliver’s Wee Fly won four of her six starts last season and will be looking to improve on her third in the Aga Ladies open at Wadebridge in January for her jockey Jo Buck.

Kingshead Hotel sponsors the Restricted. Twenty are entered including Allerford Jack who had been consistently placed in Maidens before scoring at Blackforest Lodge in January when ridden by the current area leading jockey Will Biddick. Also entered is the improving Kirkleigh who was unlucky when unseating his jockey Tom Chanin at Buckfastleigh.

The final race of the day is the Peakes & GB sponsored Confined. Of the 14 entries Alpha Native gave Will Biddick a comfortable win at Ideford Arch when pleasing his owners Sandra and Peter Clarke.

The Camilla Scott-trained Special Account is a previous Cattistock Open winner and was another unlucky one to unseat his jockey Neil Harris early on at Buckfastleigh.

The course is located off the A38 between Liskeard and Saltash.PL14 3PZ, There is on course catering, a licensed bar and bookies.

Entry is £15 per car and driver or £20 car and occupants.
