IAN CHANIN enjoyed a highly successful afternoon at the re-arranged Silverton meeting at Black Forest Lodge, with three winners and two seconds from his five rides, writes Granville Taylor.

Chanin’s first “winner” came on Molland Gayle who walked over for the Hunt race to follow up her course victory in December.

Ian landed another easy success when Lombardy Breeze swept home in the first Open Maiden. The eight-year-old galloped on relentlessly to beat Nearly Midnight by eight lengths despite tending to jump left handed. “He came from Henrietta Knight and is still very green,” reported the rider, who also owns the gelding in partnership with Brian and Loraine Kelly.

Ian’s winners were all saddled by his father Robert, and the combination went on to take the second Open Maiden thanks to the five-year-old Welstonedruid who is owned by Andrew and Sue Knox. The royal runner First Watch was backed from 3-1 to 6-4 favourite in this event, but the Princess Royal’s gelding was pulled up approaching the final fence after making most of the running.

Molland Gayle turned out again to contest the Intermediate, but had to give best to the progressive North Shropshire challenger Fruit Fayre, who was scoring her third win from four outings. “We got a bit worried coming here when it was snowing in Birmingham,” said owner Robin Lewis who already has the Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate final at Cheltenham in mind for the home bred six-year-old.

Jockey Tom David was successful on Fruit Fayre, and had earlier initiated his double on course winner Joe The Trucker in the Restricted.

The Vicar justified heavy market support in the Men’s Open under his Tenby based trainer John Mathias. “A four and a half hour journey but worth it,” said John who handles the former hurdles and chase winner on behalf of joint owners Phil Griffiths and Stewart Williams.

The Ladies’ Open produced a desperate finish. Doof and Jo Buck sailed six lengths clear round the final bend, but Lucy Gardner’s mount Mobaasher flew up the run in to grab Doof in the shadow of the post. “He is a monkey and goes when he wants to. He could have gone another half a mile,” smiled Lucy.
