The triathlon season is drawing to a close and what a season it has been for the N1 Tri club.
The New Forest Middle Distance race has become a favourite.
A Lake swim of 1.2 miles followed by 56 miles of cycling in the beautiful New forest and finally a 14 mile run (over distance from the usual) taking in a forest ‘roller coaster’-a real test!
The N1 members for the race comprised for the main part people who were racing ‘Middle Distance’ for the first time and two who were experiencing their first ever race!
The event has a reputation for excellent organisation coupled with a laid back attitude ensuring a memorable experience for all 250 plus competitors. Seasoned triathlete Tom Elliott led the club home in ninth place overall in 4:46; a superb performance. Alex Todd stepped up a race distance and gave his all finishing in 26th place in five hours exactly.
The next two N1 athletes registered a significant achievement. This time a year ago neither could swim effectively and triathlon was far from their minds. Phil Bayliss and Garry Perratt are well known runners and leading lights of the magnificent organisation that is ‘Axe Valley Runners’.
For both this was their first ever race and they both excelled. Garry used the whole experience as a learning exercise for the future but made sure his prowess as a runner was in evidence as he stormed the run section and completed the event in a time of 5:50. Bayliss made the podium too, finishing in an incredible 5:51 and winning his age category.
Next home was ‘gutsy’ Phil Rees who, ravaged by cramp, still managed a very respectable 6:01 Hadley Davies another in new territory managed his race extremely well and finished 6:0.
Rae Owens was the sole club female club representative on the course but as usual she gave of her best and demonstrated an attitude that delights and inspires her fellow club members she completed in 6:29.
The team was cheered on by a team of supporters with club mascot ‘Ironted’, fresh from his performance at ‘Ironman Wales’ taking centre stage.
Over at Langport Sprint Triathlon the NI ladies’ were in action.
Sally Hutter was the first N1 woman home followed by Ceri Henkus and then Vanessa Glyn Jones who won her age category, and next in was Jane Down.
