The Autumn Pheasant foursomes was played at East Devon, writes Paul Willoughby.

Thirty pairs vied for the trophy in calm conditions.

As always the course was in excellent condition, indeed if possible even better, as Paul Newcombe and his green-keeping team prepare it for the arrival of the English Women’s Golf County finals teams.

As you read this article the county ladies will be on day four of their five day contest.

The views were as good as always and we are coming into the mushroom and toadstool period of the year – keep a lookout for Coprinus atramentarius (Common Ink Cap) which are often found in the area of the 9th tee and 14th green.

Although it is edible it is recommended not to eat it/them accompanied by alcohol – unpleasant side effects apparently so you have been warned. A plea – please don’t kick them over; some people just bash them for the fun of it. Don’t, that’s vandalism! They are beautiful and should be left alone.

The winners of the competition were two newcomers to East Devon, both of whom work for Flybe – David Watkins joined the club in 2011 and Bob Lippet joined in 2012. Their winning score was 36 points and they each receive a prize of £25.

Second was the team of Allen Hayward and Alex Hall with 35 points and a prize of £20 each, and third on countback, also with 35 points were Bob Cummins and Nick Sear with a prize of £10 each.

There were five two’s sharing a prize fund of £90, and the team of Andy Pelosi and Cliff Lockwood had two of them on the 4th and 10th.
