The second leg of the Picture Match was played at East Devon on Sunday, 15 September, writes Paul Willoughby.
The match is played twice a year between Sidmouth GC and East Devon GC and the trophy is The Picture, a cartoon drawn by the original Sidmouth challenger in 1932 which hangs in the clubhouse of the last winning team. East Devon won it last year under the captaincy of Dennis Chivers and they’ve won it again this year under the captaincy of Simon Carter.
The first match in 2013 was played at Sidmouth in May and East Devon won by a tight twelve-and-a-half points to eleven-and-a-half.
However, with a very strong team, East Devon (10 players out of 16 had handicaps of five or better) won the foursomes in the morning five-three and the singles, on a difficult windy afternoon, by a stunning twelve-four!
This gave East Devon an overall lead of 29.5 to Sidmouth’s 18.5. Well done, team.
The opposition were gallant in their praise of the East Devon course and were impressed by the new 13th hole which was played from the very back tee making the hole 190 yards.
Credit must go to the club’s head green keeper, Paul Newcombe, and his team for presenting the course in such excellent condition.
