East Devon has ‘plonkers’ and ‘experts’ playing together

10:22 24 April 2014

Over 100 golfers took part in the Easter Stableford at East Devon on Bank Holiday Monday, writes Paul Willoughby.

Golf can be the most infuriating game; why is it that you can (sometimes) play like a God and think you’ve cracked it, and wonder why you haven’t received an invitation to play in The Open, and at other times you can feel just the same, just as enthusiastic, same stance, same swing, expectations high and yet you play like a complete plonker? (an oft used golfing term!) I like the phrase, ‘The wheels came off the trolley’ – fits my game perfectly; started with wheels, then lost them at the turn!

Then there are the others – they change into their golf shoes in the car park, have a few minutes on the practice putting green, a couple of swipes in the practice net and then, ‘bang’ – first drive right down the middle of the fairway, second shot to within 10 foot of the pin with a straight uphill putt then in for a birdie. Don’t you just hate that? How come they can do it and we can’t?

Don’t worry; they think they’ve made it (and are watching the post for that Open invitation) but next time it will be the turn of we ‘plonkers’ to rise to the top and show what we’re made of. Golf is a wonderful game and a terrible leveller but that’s what keeps us going – the knowledge that we can do it, and one day, will.

Well done to those who succeeded today in those wonderful conditions, and especially well done to John Webster who won the competition with a magnificent 44 points from a handicap of 21, now 17 – (that’ll serve him right!) – and the winner of the prize of £40. Excellent play, John.

The other leading scores were: 2, John Wood, 43 points from a handicap of 20, now 17; 3, Ray Sturman, also 43 points (18 now 14); 4, Ian Andrew, 39 points (15 now 13); 5, Glenn Page, 38 points, (5 now 4).

Other players scoring a very creditable 38 points were, Martin Bright, Tony Townsend, Bill Wentworth and Bill Nodwell.

There was a twos pot of £212 to be shared between nine players.
