The August Stableford and Cobbett Cup were the trophies played for by 110 contestants at East Devon on Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.

The cup was presented by F J Cobbett, a club member in 1908 so it is one of our oldest awards. Mr Cobbett decreed that the competition should be of Stableford format with a maximum handicap allowance of 21 and played for in August. A full handicap is now allowed.

Conditions were excellent, little wind, no rain or snow, warm, with enough cloud to prevent sunburn – just right for an English summer’s day. Talking of summer, have you noticed the dew on the grass in the early morning, the shorter days and the occasional leaves falling from the trees?

Autumn approaches (so does Christmas – one of my grandchildren asked me to write to Father Christmas for him today!) but no matter; we’ve had a good summer and how nice it is to live in a country with seasons; who would want to live in the Caribbean? Sorry, I didn’t quite hear that; you say some of you would? Ok, but you wouldn’t have the East Devon Golf Course to play on!

One member who clearly prefers an English climate was Mike Hayes who won the monthly Stableford and the Cobbett Cup with a stonking 40 points. Well done, Mike – his handicap has now been reduced from 16 to 15. Mention should also be made of Bill Edwards from Division Two.

He also had 40 points (also stonking!) but lost on countback – Bill had 18 points on the back nine whilst Mike Hayes had 20.

The other leading scores were; in Division One: 1, Bob Martin – 38 points (3 now 2); 2, Jason Rowbotham – 37 points (5); 3, Nigel Goode – 37 points (8 now 7); 4, Andy Pelosi – 37 points (4); 5, Paul Webber – 36 points (6).

Division Two: Division 2: 1, Bill Edwards – 40 points (10 now 9); 2, Mike Trapnell – 39 points (12 now 11); 3, Greg Evans – 38 points (14 now 13); 4, Neil Roughton – 38 points (11 now 10); 5, Ian Andrew – 37 points (12 now 11).

Division Three: 1, Mike Hayes – 40 points (16 now 15) The Ryder Cup beckons – Mike, do you have Paul McGinley’s telephone number?; 2, Adrian Woolacott – 38 points (16 now 15); 3, Simon Gegg – 36 points (19 now 18); 4, Eric Biddulph – 36 points (15 now 14); 5, Mike Whitehead – 25 points (15).

There was a twos pot of £220 to be shared between 18 players – Kevin Jenkins had two of them on the fourth and 13th.
