Claire Dowling was crowned East Devon Golf Club ladies’ champion for the first time last week, writes Helen Chivers.
The Championship is played over two rounds of stroke play, and the weather played its part with a strong, gusty wind making conditions particularly challenging. Dowling, who joined the club this year, conquered both the elements and the 36 holes to record a gross 163 to claim the Thelma Philp Trophy. Junior Evie Stone continued her good run of form to take home the handicap prize, and the Hilary Rolls Trophy with a nett 153.
In the scratch competition Dowling was eights shots clear of Eilidh Cameron in second place on gross 171 with another junior, Emily Morey in third with gross 173. Evie Stone was fourth with a gross 175.
Stone claimed the handicap trophy by two shots from Lisa Tinsley and Eilidh Cameron (both nett 155), Tinsley claiming second place on countback. Jenny Dobel was fourth on nett 156 and Dowling in fifth (nett 159).
