East Devon Golf Club has the honour of hosting the English Women’s Golf Association County finals next week (September 17 to 21), writes Paul Willoughby.

The Club last hosted the event in 1990 when Jill Miller was the club captain; Mrs Miller particularly remembers two facts – the Glamorgan County Champion had a hole in one on the 13th, but still lost her match, and Kate Tebbet, whose father later became the East Devon club secretary, played for the winning Cheshire team.

This year Lincolnshire representing Midlands North, will defend their title as England’s champion county and they will be challenged by the winning teams from the other five England Golf regions, Buckinghamshire (Midlands South), Essex (East), Gloucester (South West), Lancashire (North) and Surrey from the South.

The championship is one of the highlights of the women’s calendar and is always keenly contested and intensely competitive. Members and spectators will be treated to top quality golf; the field includes two former Curtis Cup players, Hannah Barwood from Gloucestershire and Helen Hewlett from Lincolnshire, who was British champion. The Lancashire side includes another former England international, Nikki Foster.

Shirley Pressey, the 2012 East Devon Ladies Captain commented: “We last hosted this event in 1990 and are honoured and delighted to be asked to host it again. The course is as good as ever and in wonderful condition; the new 13th hole and two new tees have settled in well and it will be good to see them put to the test by some of the country’s best golfers. The heather and gorse (both to be avoided) are a true picture and I am sure all the contestants will enjoy their surroundings as well as the golf. The club is providing hostesses to look after each team, 90 spotters during the week (the heather and gorse does have its down side!) as well as the starters, and 18 ball collectors on the practice ground; all have volunteered and are looking forward to being involved in the event.”

The format will be three foursome matches each morning followed by six singles each afternoon. Let’s hope the weather holds good for what will be a fascinating and most enthralling week; the contest will provide a good fillip for those suffering from post Olympic blues!
