The annual Captain’s Dinner took place at East Devon Golf Club last Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.
This is a popular event and was well attended. The dinner provided by the club’s catering staff was excellent and the guests were entertained by captain Stephen Phillips invitee, Nicholas Agg-Manning.
He gave a most entertaining speech interspersed with selling items by auction in aid of the captain’s 2012 charity, Childrens Hospice South West. The evening raised over £400 for the charity.
As it customary the captain issues a golfing challenge the next day for those who have attended the previous night’s dinner.
The format is three-ball stableford with accumulating scores – one score to count on the first six holes, two to count on the next six and all three to count on the all important final six holes.
No pressure but just make sure you sink that awful 3 foot left to right putt!
The weather was lovely – a slight breeze, but no more, and the sun gave us a surprising heat for October sufficient for the prize giving to take place on the veranda outside the club.
The scores ranged from 52 (no names!) to the winners with 68 points, Bob Edmunds, Terry Heard and Brian Spurrier.
