Archant

Clive Bennett hosted his 2014 Captain’s Day at East Devon on Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.

This is always a popular event and Clive was supported by 156 players all vying to be the Captain’s day Champion.

Some had lesser ambitions – some to avoid three putting, and others trying to correct that slice which has appeared from nowhere. Some were even trying to get out of bunkers with less than three swipes – ‘No’, I hear you say ‘You mean you took three to get out of a bunker?’ No, actually I picked up after the third unsuccessful thump!

What an infuriating game golf can be; you turn up on the day, full of expectations after your last successful round (when you impressed your friends no end!), sun shining with hardly a breeze when suddenly you play a shot like a complete beginner, which is often the beginning of the rot.

Your friends look on with sympathy – there is absolutely nothing useful they can say to a playing partner whose golfing fortunes have deserted him, or her. The compatriot might cheerily say, ‘Never mind; bad shots only come in threes’. However the fourth is not the end of the bad run; it’s the beginning of the next three!

One hundred and fifty-six players took part and there were prizes galore – longest drives, nearest the pins and nearest the pin in two on the 17th, for both men and ladies.

The overall winner and Champion was Mark Heywood with an excellent 40 points. He just pipped Paul Sear from Division One who also had 40 points, but lost on countback.

The other leading scores were.

Division 1; 2, Rob Dance, 38 points; 3, Alan Dent, 37; 4, Rob Humphrey 36.

Division 2; 1, Martin Bright, 38 points; 2, Duncan Hasell, 37; 3, Simon Husband also 37; 4, Bob Lankester, 36.

Division 3; 1, David Plumer, 38 points; 2, Dave Mears, 36; 3, Bill Ficken, 36; 4, Mike Hayes, also 36.

The longest drive for the men was won by David Blick with a colossal clout up the 14th.

The longest drive for the women was achieved by Marilyn Hobbs on the sixth.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Mike Norman, Godfrey Kent, Mike Wisdom and Rob Humphrey. Nearest the pins for the ladies were Jo Goldsworthy and Claire Dowling.

Nearest the Pin in two on the 17th was David Watson – the greenbound second shot to the 17th green is probably the most satisfying shot on the whole course, so well done, David.

The ladies’ had an 11 hole team event and the winners were Anne Serle, Shane Lyon and Helen Chivers with an excellent 52 points, writes Paul Willoughby.

Second was the lady captain’s team consisting of Elaine Whitehead (LC) Margaret Powell and Sally Underwood with 50 points.

In third, also with 50 points, but third on countback were the trio of Sue Burley, Judy Murray and Val Humphrey.

There was a twos pot of £308 shared between twenty players – Gary Bishop had two of them on the 10th and 13th

The prize giving ceremony was well attended with 76 players and guests enjoying a Tapas evening, presented by club chef, Lucienne Kidd. It was an excellent day and evening, and enjoyed by all.
