Thirty-seven players entered the seniors’ Baliey Salvers Foursomes at East Devon on Monday, writes Paul Willoughby.

For the non golfers, foursomes is where you play in pairs and take it in turns to hit the ball. In a better ball competition the players play their own ball and the best score (of the two) counts – so if you make a horlicks of a shot, you can always rely on your mate!

Not so in foursomes; you are both equally responsible and there is much greater pressure on each player, not just to perform well but not to let your partner down. Rory McIlroy underwent enormous pressure at Hoylake over the weekend – thousands, if not millions of eyes watching him on every shot and between his ears his brain was saying, ‘Head down, keep focussed, ignore the crowd’, (especially the prat (and there is always one) who shouts, ‘In the hole’ when the ball has just been driven from the tee). Don’t you just hate that?

You think that’s pressure? Well, that’s nothing compared to the burden on each player in an East Devon foursomes competition! Only the mentally tough survive the course, but here at EDGC we pride ourselves on being able to ignore the crowd and their ribald banter.

The leading players who ignored the barracking from the spectators and were able to concentrate on their game were as follows:

1, Allen Hayward and Clive Pantoll with 41 points and winners of the Bailey Salver Foursomes. Well done, you two. Four points ahead of your nearest rivals; St Andrews (the home of next year’s Open) awaits you! 2, John Threlfall and Taff Powell, 37 points; 3, John Jago and Trevor Huxtable, also 37 points; 4, Godfrey Kent and Will Stogdon, 36 points; 5, Michael O’Reilly and Lewis Maby, 35 points.

There was a two’s pot of £74 to be shared between four pairs; Allen Hayward and Clive Pantoll had two of them the eighth and 13th holes.
