Exwick Village 2, East Budleigh Reserves 4
This was another good team display that sent Budleigh through to the second round of the Devon Intermediate Cup, writes Mark Auton.
After a tetchy start on a small pitch Budleigh began to get the upper hand; Tom Christian and Ben Rowland were causing the hosts problems out wide whilst Matt Jones and Steve Hitchcock were solid at the back.
The opening goal arrived after a quarter of an hour; Rich Wyatt curling a dream through ball to Wheatley who drilled an equally good finish past the Exwick stopper.
Five minutes into the second half it was that man Wheatley again who fired in his and Budleigh’s second, but it wasn’t to be all plain sailing as the home side pulled a goal back.
Budleigh were getting free-kicks in dangerous areas and after a couple of wild attempts Rowland showed them how to do it with a low hard drive that went through the wall for 3-1.
Exwick were then reduced to ten men, but Budleigh took their foot off the gas and were duly punished. Despite this Budleigh always looked the more likely to go through.
Last weeks four goal hero Joe Rosser was relentless with his driving runs and was unlucky not to notch, before the Exeter side lost another player to injury.
Budleigh this time took full advantage; Player Manager Colin Jeans was the provider of the clinching goal feeding Christian who took it round the keeper before slotting home.
This Saturday Budleigh will hope to take their cup form into the league when they host otterton in a local derby.
The First X1 went down 2-0 at Stoke Gabrial in the Senior Cup and will look to bounce back when they visit Tipton in Division 1 (both games kick off at 3pm).
