East Budleigh Explorers made a debut appearance in the Exeter Chess Championships, writes Brian Gosling.
They had home advantage for the visit of Tiverton Tigers.
Two of the team, Mike Lee and Brian Le Masurier had never played in a league match before and Michael Lester was making a welcome return to chess after a five year lay-off.
For a long time it looked fairly even, but long endgames on boards two and four gradually went against the home team. East Budleigh did manage to secure success on board one and secured a share of the spoils on board three.
The final result of one-and-a-half to East Budleigh and two-and-a-half to Tiverton was seen as a success for the inexperienced home side.
Scores (East Budleigh names first): Board 1 – BGE Gosling 1, IV Annetts 0; Board 2 – M Lee 0, J Knowles 1; Board 3 – M Lester half, ST Tracey half; Board 4 – B Le Masurier 0, A Brinkley 1.
The club meets on the second Thursday of every month and the next meeting is on Thursday, December 12 at 7pm at All Saints Church Hall for a Christmas Handicap Tournament. This will be a fun event and suitable for both beginners and more experienced players alike. The first meeting in the New Year will be on Thursday, January 9. Annual membership fee is £30 for adults and £15 for juniors. For more details contact Brian Gosling via email at email@example.com or by phone at 01395-442060.
