East Budleigh Chess Club brings succesful league season to an end

11:08 01 May 2014

The last Exeter and District Chess League fixture was played against Exeter Gambits at the Heavitree Social Club, writes Brian Gosling.

The Exeter team only needed to draw the match to become the new league champions but in the end they went one better and won the match convincingly.

The East Budleigh players overcame their initial disappointment to wholeheartedly congratulate the new League winners ably captained by Brian Aldwin.

This brings to an end the club’s first season in the League The total result over the first season must be looked upon as a real success for a new club against much more experienced sides. The complete Exeter and District Chess League results plus league tables can be viewed at the excellent web site: http://exeterchessclub.org.uk/content/exeter-district-league-results-201314

Recently the club has been strengthened by the addition of a number of new members so the future looks secure. There is even talk of entering a team in the Rapid Play League for next season and it is hoped to re-introduce the Ladder competition to the club members.

Although the League season has finished there are plenty of tournaments taking place over the summer months in which players can take part.

The British Championships take place from July 9 to August 2 at Aberystwyth University, http://englishchess.org.uk/BCC2014 and offers different standards of competition for all age groups.

Closer to home is the Frome Congress in May and the Paignton Congress in September. Details can be found on the Chess Devon website: http://chessdevon.co.uk or from the club secretary. The East Budleigh club meets on the second Thursday of the month. The last meeting this season is on: Thursday May 8, at 7pm at All Saints Church Hall .

The new season starts on September 11.
