There were 106 competitors who played in the monthly stableford at East Devon on Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.

Prior to the meeting there was another great thunderstorm on Thursday morning; not as spectacular as last month, but still very impressive!

The third hole at East Devon was hit by a lightning bolt some years ago early one Saturday morning when the green staff were just about to start work. “Helluva bang” one said.

You would imagine lightning would leave a circular impact, but this one left an S shaped indentation 15’ long, 18” wide and six-inches deep!

Earth and stones were thrown all over the place - you can still see the impact position today by the slightly different coloured grass. However, play was still possible on that Saturday’s competition. Scientists have discovered lightning on Mars within dust storms like whirlwinds whose tops are higher than Mt. Everest.

If we were hit by one of those, one imagines it might take slightly longer to repair the damage and the Ground Under Repair sign might be there till Christmas!

The winner of the competition in true Hoylake style (wasn’t that exciting?) was Brian (‘Call me Rory’) Spurrier from Division One with an impressive 40 points from a handicap of 9, now 8.

Well done, Brian. He was closely followed by Michael (‘Call me Sergio’) O’Reilly from Division Two with 39 points from a handicap of 13, now 12.

The other leading scores were:

Division One; 2, Bill Peaker, 38 points (8 now 7); 3, Matt Stone, 38 points (5); 4, Robin Murray, 37 points (4); 5, Bob Horton, also 37 points (8).

Division Two; 2, Glenn (‘Call me Ricky!’) Tucker, 39 points (10 now 9); 3, Chris Taunton, 38 points (10 now 9); 4, Mark Anderson, 38 points, (14 now 13); 5, Mike Trapnell, 37 points (12); 6, Bill Coles, also 37 points (11).

Division Three;

1, Simon Gegg, 37 points (19); 2, Roger Chappell, 35 points (15); 3, Sam Corney, 35 points (22); 4, Robert Winter, 35 points (18); 5, Trevor Reeve, also 35 points (23).

There was a twos pot of £200 to be shared between 17 players; Glenn Page scored two of them at the fourth and 13th holes.
