Gill Davies, a member of East Devon Golf Club at Budleigh Salterton has attained a prestigious qualification in the golfing world, writes Paul Willoughby.
Gill was one of four Devon women, and one Devon man, who were recently awarded the title of County Referee by England Golf, the governing body for both men’s and women’s amateur golf in England.
This means that Gill is now recognised as qualified to referee men’s and women’s events at County level.
The award followed her pass with Distinction at a gruelling two-day regional Qualifying Rules School organised by England Golf at Exeter Golf and Country Club in June.
Gill’s success at the Regional school followed a “top ten” finish at an earlier one-day Rules School run by Devon County Golf Union at Fingle Glen Golf Hotel where she became a Club Referee, qualified to referee at Club level.
James Rowland of Holsworthy, who is an England Golf Tournament Referee and was a tutor at both schools said, “Our brilliant Devon ladies have brought credit to the County.
Jane Wain of Bigbury GC, Su Calver of Woodbury Park GC, Gill Davies of East Devon GC and Lesley Pascoe of Stover all did magnificently, passing with Distinction and outshining other candidates from all parts of the UK.
They have already been put to work officiating at events in the County”.
James added: “The Rules of Golf are sometimes criticised for their complexity, often by those who have not actually read them.
In fact, when you consider the size of a golf ball in relation to the planet, and the millions of different situations that can and do arise on a golf course every day, it is a marvel that the answer to any question can be found somewhere in just thirty four carefully worded Rules”.
So, well done Gill.
