Nearly 200 players took part in Trevor Underwood’s Professional’s Day at East Devon golf club, writes Paul Willoughby.

It was an excellent turnout for a very popular event celebrating Trevor’s 28 years as the club professional. There were 45 teams and the format was four-ball with the best two scores to count – a comfortable arrangement where you can rely on your partners, at least until they hoik their drive into the bushes or three putt; then the pressure is back on the remaining three.

The weather was excellent with blue skies, a gentle breeze and flags flapping languidly; perfect conditions for golf and no excuse for playing badly.

As well as the team prizes there were many others; longest drives and nearest the pins for both men and ladies. There was even a prize for the worst drive from the first tee and the doubtful ‘winner’ (who shall remain nameless!) won a bottle of wine and a round of applause from everyone else who, with sighs of relief, managed to get their drives further!

The longest drive for the men was hit by Stuart Jose with a colossal shot up the 12th whilst Carole Brailey hit the longest drive for the ladies on the fifth.

The winning team in 2013 scored an astonishing 90 points. This year’s winners came close with an excellent 87 points and the team consisted of James Thomas, Chris Hill, Jason Schofield and Tom Partridge. Second place went to the team of Simon Husband, Trevor Reeve, Alan Forte and Emily Morey with 86 points.

Three members of that team came second in 2013 and fourth in 2012 so, well done, to them. The third team, also with 86 points was Mark Lavers, Stephen Morton, Don Peek and Alistair Mackenzie-Ross.

The winning ladies team comprised Claire Phillips, Helen Chivers, Carole Brailey and Elaine Bright with a very creditable 82 points. There were 16 twos with each team receiving eleven balls.

It was an excellent day and our thanks go to Trevor and his assistant professional, Matt Lockey for organising the event. Thanks also go to Paul Newcombe and his team for presenting us with a superb course and Someone Else for keeping the players dry!
