Fifty-three teams of four competed in Captains’ Charity Day at East Devon on Wednesday, July 9, writes Paul Willoughby.

The charities chosen this year by club captain, Clive Bennett and ladies’ captain, Elaine Whitehead are The Multiple Sclerosis Society and Force.

MS is a long term neurological condition and once diagnosed, stays with a person for life. There is no cure. It affects around 100,000 people in the UK and is particularly prevalent in women. When someone has MS the body’s own immune system damages the protective coating on nerves inside the brain and spinal cord. This disrupts the messages that pass along them.

Because the brain and spinal cord control everything we do, disrupted messages can affect different parts of the body. MS is complex and has many symptoms which might include fatigue, vision problems and difficulties with walking.

Force cancer charity has played a vital role in local cancer services for 26 years and holds the belief that anyone diagnosed with cancer deserves the best possible treatment and professional support close to home.

Their work finances improvements in patient care through research and the purchase of advanced equipment. Their cancer support and information centre is located in the grounds of the RD and E hospital.

The first of the 212 contestants started their game at 7am and the last players tee’d off at nearly 3pm – a full day.!

The ladies’ section provided the registration team and score checkers (never an easy task) and the men provided the starters - it was a full day behind the scenes as well as on the course. The conditions were difficult with a strong wind and the scores varied enormously. I won’t mention the lowest score but the winning team by a comfortable margin with a magnificent 83 points, was Paul Maslen, Cliff Lockwood, Andy Pelosi and Clive Pantoll.

There were prizes for longest drives, nearest he pin, ladies teams and mixed teams and at the prize giving, captain Clive Bennett thanked all the sponsors especially the principal sponsor of the event, Paul Thompson of Time Critical Couriers.

The captain also announced that the event had raised a magnificent £12,000 to be shared between the two charities. An excellent day and enjoyed by all.
