Two more competitions to report this week, writes Paul Willoughby.

The seniors played a strokeplay (every shot counts) Texas Scramble on the penultimate Monday of October (yellow tees = shorter course) and The Captain’s Challenge - also strokeplay – was played on the final Saturday of the month.

You all know what strokeplay or ‘medal’ is, but a Texas Scramble may take a bit of explaining. OK, here goes. Teams of four; all drive (hit!) from the tee. The players choose which is the best drive then three of them move their balls to that position. Then all four hit again and repeat the process till one of them sinks the putt. Got it?

That means that all four are playing each shot from the best position on the fairway or green, so you can expect to see some excellent scores.

If contestants play to their handicaps then their score would be 72. Anything more and maybe a lesson or two is required, but anything less is good, better or best.

Well the bestest (!) team scored 56.4 points, which is exceptional and consisted of nine pars and nine birdies – clearly they were playing out of their socks and they were David Harrison, George Rogers, Chris Dearsley and Martin Wisdom. The second team consisted of Cliff Lockwood, Bob Martin, Phil Griffin and Richard Gerry who scored 59.7 and the third team, with the same score, but third on countback, were Kim Johnson, Geoff Walden, Andy Scott and Rob Barnes.

Now the Captain’s Challenge was a two-ball, better ball competition - remember the yardstick of 72 and you’ll see how well the leading players fared.

1, Jason Rowbotham and Robert Dance – 64; 2, Ray Dawson and brother Bob – 65; 3, George Rogers and David Harrison – 65 (on countback); 4, Danny Lewis and Zachary Calland, also 65 (on countback); 5, Jim Colvin and Nigel Goode, 66

There was a twos pot of £208 to be shared between eight players (you do the maths); Danny Lewis scored his on the 341-yard second hole which must have surprised him and given him a smile a mile wide!

Some of you non-golfers may be wondering what the word, ‘countback’ means. Well, sorry to disappoint you but I’m going to leave you to work it out!
