East Budleigh Chess Club had mixed success in its last two Exeter League matches, writes Brian Gosling.
Against Seaton, we were heavily out graded 477-421 (LIMIT 480), but we came close to drawing the match 2-2 until our captain made a terrible blunder in the quick play stage of the game.
Fortunately we were saved from a complete whitewash with a fine win by Barbara Newcombe. Against Tiverton the club achieved a good match draw 2-2.
Half of the team consisted of the father/son duo, Mike and Max Lee. Mike played a wonderful attack against his opponent leading to checkmate. Max played well and was material up but lost out to a very nasty knight fork. Those pesky knights again! The remaining two games were drawn.
A new training idea was tried out in the last club night which has met with universal approval.
Eight positions from recent master games were set up and the club members were given five minutes to find the best moves in each position.
Local music teacher Kevin Hurst came out on top, solving seven out of eight of the puzzles closely followed by Barbara Newcombe. Easter Eggs were given out in prizes.
