Oxford 3, Exe 1

Exe 1st XI battled their way through strong winds and rain simply to take to the pitch for their latest league outing with the Oxford Hawks.

Prior to the start a minutes silence was observed to honour the recent passing of an Oxford umpire.

The game started at a high tempo and Exe came under immediate pressure with the home side winning a number of short corners. The visitors defended well, but were undone in the 27h minute when the home side went ahead from a short corner.

Exe were well in the contest though and made their way confidently out of defence through Helen Bray and Laura Jones, making a series of linking plays with midfielders Rebecca Fagg and Bridie Marlow’

The home side carried a threat from some slick counter-attacking play and they got off a number of powerful shots, all of which Exe goalkeeper Suzy eagles was equal to and half-time arrived with just the one goal between the teams.

Exe were confident at the break, but they were soon o the back foot from the re-start as Oxford won a series of short corners. After a series of miss-traps and hitting a foot on the line, Oxford were awarded a penalty stroke. Although appealed by Exe it was given and Oxford made it 2-0. Exe then threw caution to the wind and took the game to the hosts competing with even greater intensity with some crisp play through Laura Allen and Kelly Luscombe.

Molly Coleman went close when denied by a good save from the home ‘keeper in a one-on-one.

Exe battled well, but were again undone by a slick counter-attack as Oxford made it 3-0 in the 55th minute.

In the closing stages Exe had good penetrating attacks from wide through Rebecca Fagg and they were rewarded for their contribution to a fine game when a straight strike was converted by captain Kirsty Crocker for a consolation goal for her side.

Suzy Eagles deservedly won the Exe Player of the Match award.
