Dunkeswell Kart Racing Club success for Ling

Blue skies and big grids were order of the day as Round Two of the Dunkeswell Kart Racing Club 2014 Championship was staged last weekend.

First out were the Libre Cadet Grid and over the three heats, Two names topped the time sheets with Shay Keogh leading the 4 IAME drivers home whilst Ethan Ling did the same in the Honda class taking all three heats.

A special mention must go to Bradley Horsnell for his spectacular end to heat one! In the Minimax class it was Tommy Foster who dominated this improving grid and behind him it was a battle of the girls as Jemima Hepworth took two second places to Paige Holden’s one. Peter Griffin won the first two Junior Max heats before local driver, Izaac Channing snatched one back in the third to set up a thrilling final. The Senior Max class produced three different heat winners as both Leon Hilliard, Josh Grey and James Johnson all took the chequered flag leaving the grid wide open. Colin Davis topped the timing sheets in the Rotax 177 class securing pole for the final and leaving Darren Lane, Alan Moore and Steve James to fight it out for a place next to him on the grid. It was great to welcome back the 250 National Gearbox class back to Dunks and the crowds were treated to the first standing start since 2012 and it was brilliant! Roy Beal took heat 1 with Ash Goodliffe taking the other two.

The finals were all cued up to provide some excellent racing and they didn’t disappoint. In the Libre Cadet class, it was Ling and Keogh who led the way quickly putting a clear gap between them and the chasing pack. Ling’s Honda, edged the IAME of Keogh to take the win by 1.5 seconds with Alex Eades and Charlie Knight rounding off the top three for Honda with Luke Francis and Toby McDonald doing the same for the IAME class. Tommy Foster again dominated the Minimax final but in the battle of the girls it was Holden who edged Hepworth to the second step of the podium in a close race. Griffin was quick off the line in the Junior Max final and managed to keep Channing behind him until lap eight when Channing slipped past and managed to hold on to take the win by 0.07 of a second from Griffin. Brandon Patrick was third some five seconds adrift. The Senior Max final was temporarily run under the battenburg when Hilliard took himself out at Hanger. At the restart, Stew Baker was jumped at the restart by Johnson who held on to take the win. Baker was second and Josh Gray rounded off the top three. Colin Davis made it four from four in the 177 class with Darren Lane rounding off a good day in second with Julian Howell in third. The Gearbox boys were last up and a struggling Beal handed the win to Goodliffe after he pulled off the circuit three times to sort a recurring problem but still managed to finish the race!

An excellent weekends action at Devon’s premier race track and thanks have to go to the Race Admin and Timing teams as well as the Marshals, Medical team and officials who kept the racing going. If you would like to know more or catch the action yourself the next race meeting is on April 27.
