Gliding teams waiting for their launches at the South West Inter-Club League meeting

For the last two weekends, members of Devon and Somerset Gliding Club competed in the South West region of the Inter-Club League, writes Jill Harmer.

The first weekend took place at Mendip Gliding Club on the hills above Cheddar gorge, the weather unfortunately did not cooperate.

On Saturday, the tasks were cancelled and on Sunday only our team took a launch. Matthew Williamson from Plymouth in the Novice class flew to the first turnpoint and back to the airfield.

Andrew Mugleston from Kerswell landed back at the airfield without venturing too far.

Henry Ford from Exeter in the Intermediate class went for a downwind dash for glory, afternoon of tea in a farmhouse followed by an epic retrieve! As we were the only team to launch we won each class.

Last weekend, the teams met at Wyvern Gliding Club at Upavon on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain. This time the soaring conditions were slightly better although a rather late start on Saturday meant that only two of our team managed to complete their tasks.

Andrew Mugleston in the Pundit class completed 165km, and James Hood from Plymouth in the Intermediate class completed 140km. On Sunday, Both Andrew and James set off on task but returned to base as the first turning point was in ‘bad air’.

Henry Ford managed to get round the first turnpoint as he took off earlier and went on to complete 60% of his task.

The points are still being calculated but we have great expectations of coming first or second out of the seven clubs in the south-west region with the prospect of going on to the national final.
