Devon and Somerset Gliding Club climb the ladder in the regional competition.

This weekend was the North Hill leg of the South-west region Inter Club League, writes Jill Harmer.

This is an event that sees members of our seven nearest Gliding Clubs compete to go forward to the finals of a naional competition later in the summer.

After a dreadfully wet day on Saturday where no flying was possible club flying was back in progress on Sunday.

For the competition it proved to be a little tricky for setting tasks, but by lunchtime, the soaring conditions were setting up nicely.

Due to the restricted time, the tasks were set based on Taunton and Chard as minimum turn points, but enabled the individual pilots to decide to go further if the conditions allowed.

The Devon and Somerset club team consisted of Matthew Williamson from Plymouth flying his SF27 in the Novice Class, James Hood from Plymouth flying ASW20 in the Intermediate Class and Simon Minson from Chard flying his ASW20 in the Pundit Class.

The scoring of the competition has a handicap factor depending on the performance of different glider types. The classes are set on pilot experience.

Williamson landed at Chard, but managed to win the Novice class with a lower handicap.

Hood breezed round the task to win the Intermediate class, and Minson, the clubs pundit pilot completed the task, but was beaten in distance by the others in his class.

In all it proved to be a great team effort all-round bringing the North Hill team up the rankings provisionally from fourth to third after two rounds of the Inter Club League.
