A mixed home friendly with Babbacombe bowlers resulted in Budleigh’s triples winning on four of the five rinks by a score of 109-66.
The highest winning rink was that of Tony Dealler who afterwards paid tribute to the performance of his lead, Chris Loman, who bowled to a standard well beyond expectation for someone whose experience can be measured in months, not years.
Together with the ever-reliable George Woolacott, this winning combination were unstoppable and finished on plus 15.
Burges Stace was a close second with plus 12 and Mike Shaw, plus 10, and Gerry Roberts, plus 5 also made valuable contributions
A friendly at Teignmouth’s Bitton Park club ended in a heavy defeat for Budleigh and the score was such that discretion dictates it should not be dwelt upon.
However, our travellers were successful on one rink when George Woolacott, cast in the unfamiliar role of skip, and ably supported by two of our newer Ladies, Jill Pond and Ann Vincent, won by a single shot with a score of 14-13.
Needing three to win, George W’s final delivery of the game was something of a miracle wood, (or so he would have us believe !) transforming an unpromising head into a match winner, - well done all three !
Captain John Vanstone took six triples to Madeira for a friendly and a warm welcome from Dave McCauley was followed by an enjoyable afternoon’s bowling.
Played in the right spirit with plenty of humour, the closeness of the contest can be judged by the final score of Madeira 135, Budleigh 67. This was quite a nail-biter with the result in doubt right up to the third end !
Budleigh’s finest were Bill Barber, Stuart Spencer and Allan Cottle, who came from behind to win 18-16, and Archie Autton’s triple snatched a 16-all draw on the final end.
Peter Cooper and Allan Cottle are through to the quarter-final of the men’s pairs championship and Archie Autton will contest the semi-final of the 2-wood competition.
Ann Cottle has advanced to the semi-final of the open singles, while Peter Cooper has won his latest match for the men’s novice cup.
