Youngster Robison the all-round star as Topsham St James II seal first win of league season

Topsham St James’s 2nd XI were six wicket winners when they met Exwick on a hot sunny afternoon.

Skipper Brian Jeary won yet another toss and invited Exwick to bat first.

The opening bowling attack had a youthful look about it with Jack Telford and Cameron Robison bowling in tandem and it was Robison who struck first when a rising delivery was gloved by the batsman into the gloves of Tops’ wicketkeeper Martin Porter.

Shortly after Robison struck again before he and Telford made way for the experienced duo Rudi Ellis and skipper Jeary. Ellis struck twice in quick succession to reduce the visitors to 57-4. A third wicket for Ellis was soon followed by the first senior wicket for Mathew Pring, leaving Exwick on a troubled 91-6.

The middle and late order batsmen rallied to help their side limp to a close of 158 all out.

One moment of quality that must be mentioned concerns Ed Gorton who, with the batsmen looking for a quick single, managed to pick up the ball on his follow through and with a full length dive run out the batsman for the final wicket!

The pick of the bowling figures fell to young Robison who finished with four wickets for 23 runs from a full shift of nine overs whilst Ellis finished with 4-26 from his nine over spell.

Skipper Jeary launched the run chase with Saad Choudhary, but hopes of a solid start were soon dashed as two wickets fell for the addition of just 15 runs.

Choudhary was joined by Neil Argyle and together they started some much needed repair work. They had put on 49 before Argyle was out for 17 with the score on 64. Choudhary was then joined by Rudi Ellis and they added 53 before Ellis fell for 15 with the total 117.

This brought young Robison to the middle and he completed a superb all-round contribution hitting an unbeaten 26 that included five fours to help guide the team to their first win of the season. Choudhary finished not out 77, an innings that included a dozen fours and one six.
