Topsham St James Under-15s were emphatic winners when they met Sidmouth in a Bradleys East Devon Youth League game, writes Sam Sherrett.

For the umpteenth time this term the home side lost the toss and Sidmouth opted to bat first on another good Bonfire Field wicket.

The visitors made a flying start, racing to 48 after just seven overs! The bulk of the runs were scored by Byron Knowles (28) whilst number three bat, Benjamin Marsh, chipped in with 16.

However, the Topsham bowlers then took charge and the Sidmouth middle order was torn apart as six wickets fell for just 15 runs!

Late on in the innings Topsham felt aggrieved when the ball seemed to come off the bat into the keepers gloves, but the umpire ruled it not out; it mattered not though, for three balls later the same player was caught superbly in the deep by Laurence Joy off the bowling of Richard Dee Shapland.

With some excellent fielding to support the bowling effort the innings closed on an under-par total of 87.

The home run chase was led by openers James Wright and Laurence Joy and the former gave his side the perfect start thumping the very first delivery he faced over the ropes for six!

The pair continued to dominate proceedings to secure a ten wicket win with fully 13 overs to play!
