Topsham St James power to ten wicket win over Kilmington

13:13 22 August 2014

Following on from their win against Kenn last week, Topsham St James were in buoyant mood when they welcomed Kilmington to Bonfire Field on Saturday, writes Sheila Harding.

Having won the toss, they asked Kilmington to bat in the cool, blustery conditions.

Before the scorer had time to lift her pen and with no runs on the board, the first wicket fell, caught by Dan Armstrong off the bowling of Ross Treleaven.

Scoring was very slow and Kilmington had only reached 19 by the eleventh over when Ben Lucas was clean bowled by Nick Horne.

There followed a steady period until Ed Baxter took an excellent catch on the boundary off the bowling of Tamer James to remove Adam Culley with the score on 59 in the twentieth over. This led to a flurry of wickets to bring Kilmington to 71-6 in the twenty-seventh over, the last of these being John Lavender who had put up sterling resistance scoring 36 off 72 balls. The last four wickets fell for 39 run, 33 of which were scored by Captain Ralph Cook.

Thus, Kilmington finished on 110 all out off 40.2 overs. Nick Horne took four wickets for 15 runs, Tamer James three wickets for 30 runs, Ross Treleaven two wickets for 19 runs and Dan Armstrong one wicket for 11 runs. Special mention should also be made of Edd Kirby who bowled five overs, two of which were maidens and he conceded just three runs.

Topsham St James went straight onto the attack after tea and didn’t lose a wicket while achieving the 111 necessary to win in only 14 overs. Nick Horne scored an unbeaten 76 from 52 balls including 13 fours and one six whilst Tamer James scored 24 not out from 31 balls faced, hitting four four’s.

The 10-wicket win gave the Saints 22 points and a second win of the season. Despite the success Kenn’s surprise win over Countess Wear means Topsham St James will start next season in the F Division.
