The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) held their first blood donation session at County Ground in Taunton and members of the Somerset squad, including captain Marcus Trescothick, were first through the door.

The skipper said: “I’m only too pleased to be donating blood. It’s good that we try to do our bit to help people and support our local community.”

“This is the first time that the County Ground has held a blood donor session and as we were all here training anyway we thought that it would be good to give as much support as we possibly could, that’s why there are so many volunteers from the squad here.”

He added: “With it being at the Club and on our doorstep we thought that it was a great idea to pop along and help to promote blood donation and to donate ourselves at the same time.”

Arul Suppiah, who has been awarded benefit season in 2013 by the Club said: “I have never given blood before but I know that this simple, selfless act can benefit so many people. I have been following NHSBT’s 100k campaign and this seemed like a brilliant time to get involved with blood donation.”

“Most of the guys who are around at this time are donating blood and it’s only right that we give something back and it’s a good thing to do.”

Suppiah added: “It’s good to start my Benefit Year of 2013 by giving something back so I’m only too happy to help out like this.”

Fast bowler Steve Kirby is another who was in the queue to give a pint of his blood.

“We were all asked if we wanted to donate blood so I was only too happy to volunteer because I think it’s a very important cause and with sportsmen like us being involved it raises the awareness of the scheme.”

Kirby concluded: “The Club and the players do a lot of work to support charities and good causes in the area which I think is only right, so I’m happy to do my bit today.”
