Somerset sign South African ace Morkel

Somerset followers have received a further boost with the news of another arrival at the County Ground.

The Cidermen’s newest overseas signing Albie Morkel pretty much ticks all the boxes as far as skipper Marcus Trescothick is concerned. The County Ground favourite cannot wait to lead a side that contains both the South African import and the West Indies’ big-hitting all-rounder Chris Gayle. Trescothick said: “We search for the best, for the people who are going to fit into what we want and the positions we need, players who are three dimensional types of cricketers who can win you the game with the bat or the ball or in the field. We have had that with Kieron Pollard and Roelof van der Merwe, and now we’ve got that with Albie as well. Albie has got good stats playing in the IPL Twenty20 and he is currently in the South African one-day team, and he nearly came to play for Somerset a few years ago when I was still playing for England in 2004. He is a very attacking player who bowls seamers, and can be used at pretty much any point in the game and is a good three-dimensional Twenty20 cricketer. Having Chris Gayle and Albie Morkel playing for Somerset is going to make it a pretty dynamic team. Gayle at the top of the order is going to be explosive, and then there’s a bit of experience from Albie in the middle. He can play a similar sort of role as Jos Buttler and Pete Trego later on and he also gives you the options with the ball, as well.”

When asked if Morkel would be the player who would help Somerset cross the line and win the Twenty20 Cup this year, Trescothick said: “I think we had better take things one step at a time. We have got a lot of work to do before we get ourselves into any position to win the Twenty20 Cup. The lads are training well currently and putting all the hard work into the preparation, but everything is looking good at the moment going into the start of the season.”
