Budleigh 2nds claimed a notable scalp at the weekend as they became the first team to defeat Cornwood II in the Francis Clark, Devon League 2nd XI A Division this season, writes Steve Birley.

The Otters suffered a pre-match blow when Alex Craib was injured in the warm-up and his place was taken by 13-year-old James Doble, who had travelled to support the team and watch older brother Ed play!

The victory strengthens the Budleigh hold on the second promotion berth and they go into the last six games of the season with a ten point lead over third placed Plympton II and are 24 shy of leaders Cornwood II.

The table-topping hosts won the toss and opted to bat but were hit by the early loss of Will Caufield, bowled by Plowman (1-28).

Plowman and fellow opener Gore bowled well, but after the early wicket there was little joy until an astute change of tactic by skipper Lloyd White.

Pace-off-the-ball was introduced and this did the trick as Marley (2-19) and White (3-33) ripped out the top order leaving the home side struggling on 98-6!

The late middle order rallied. However, Mills (2-29), Doble (1-24) and the return of Plowman ensured wickets continued to fall and the run rate was kept in check with the innings coming to a close on 157-9.

The post-tea run chase suffered an early blow when opener Parkin was trapped leg before for a single with the score on six!

Messom (54) and White (33) then batted superbly for the next 15 overs stoking the ball to all parts of the ground until both lost their wicket in quick succession, each falling to a catch behind.

However, three down and one run shy of 100 with 25 overs remaining, it was the Otters who were in the box seat!

The hosts, protecting their proud season long unbeaten record, had other ideas and hit back - in style! Four wickets fell for the addition of just three runs as May, England, Marley and Mills all fell.

Youngsters Joe Gore (19) and Ed Doble (14) dug deep to begin the fight-back, but Doble became the eighth wicket to fall and his demise, with the total on 127, saw Plowman come to the wicket.

Having been struck on the back by a delivery being returned to the stumps he swiftly claimed retribution despatching the next two balls to the boundary for a total of ten runs!

Gore fell with the run chase just three runs short of success! That brought young James Doble to the wicket to join Plowman.

With four balls remaining in the final over and the scores level, Doble and Plowman went for what looked a ‘suicidal’ single.

However, fortune was on their side for a miss-field enabled them to scamper home for a bye to secure a famous single wicket win.

Plowman trooped off unbeaten on 19 whilst young Doble, with one to his name, had played a huge part in proceedings.
